One night in Southbridge…
Having never done a full three hours of our work in one shot, we were understandably nervous about the show last night out at the starlite in Southbridge. It turned out to be easily one of the best gigs we’ve ever done.
Fair to say we’re developing a fan base in Southbridge — a couple who saw us the last time we were there came out to see us specifically, a group of guys became instant Faro admirers and wouldn’t stop staring open mouthed at his bass playing. Chris Lawton’s guitar never sounded better and had its own appreciative audience. Chris O’ Donnell tore up the kit over and over again (sending one woman seated at the bar into constant spasms of air-drumming), and Tony traded comments about the poetry with a gentleman up front over the course of two sets before he had to leave.
Highlights? A full band version of the entire “Jim’s Fall” suite, the first thing Faro and Tony ever did together long ago. “Water Inside Song Inside Water” to open — a piece Tony wrote and performed only once before, solo, to open a concert by bass legend William T. Parker at Clark U some time back. “Nothing Worth Doing,” a brand new piece with Tony on guitar that may become a staple of the sets. For Christmas, the crowd got Faro’s jaw dropping tapped 6-string bass solo version of “Carol Of the Bells,” last night accompanied by O-D riffing away behind the kit. The list goes on and on — a night of highlights.
Videos and photos were taken — we’ll link to ’em as soon as we can.
We’ll be back on January 14th to do it all again. Thanks to starlite and Demetri Kasperson for making this possible, and to Melissa Mitchell and Capri Lanning-Cafaro for the constant love and support.
Getting what for the holidays?
Why, the entire Duende Project discography, of course! Five albums of solid poetry and music from Faro, Lawton, O-D, and Tony at a 25% discount if you get it all. It’ll cost you less than the new Grateful Dead box set, the new Rush box set…heck, less than MOST box sets these days, and you’ll have EVERY SINGLE TRACK we’ve ever released. Such a deal.
Go get it HERE.
And of course, if you just want one album, or even a single track, you can do that too. Same link, same place, same special sauce.
Practice notes…
Excellent practice yesterday in advance of our gig on Thursday.
Worked up full band arrangements of all the work in the very first ever Duende Project, um, project — the “Jim’s Fall” suite, originally done with just Tony and Faro on voice and bass, respectively. It was the first thing we ever did as a unit, and it’s what first solidified the idea that this would be a long term relationship. Taking on new life nine years later — it’s a trip.
We also worked up a straight ahead jazz treatment of “Water Inside Song Inside Water,” a longer piece originally done as a solo poem used to open a show by renowned avant-garde jazz bassist and composer William T. Parker back in 2010. Never set it to music before…
There’s more, but don’t want to give away all the secrets…you’ll have to come see on the 10th, and surely some of this will be making it out to the public on future recordings. Stay tuned…
December 10th looms…
We’ll be doing a full night of music and poetry out at starlite, a cool bar/performance space in the town of Southbridge, MA on Thursday, Dec 10th. Toward making that night a great one, we’re going to be rehearsing this afternoon at Duende Project World Headquarters…doing some new stuff and old.
Also coming up in the near future will be a duo version of the show at the 7 Hills Poetry Slam in Worcester, MA on January 3rd. Tony and Faro will be back where it all started over 9 years ago. Who knows what will happen?
You will if you show up, of course….check out the “Gigs” page here for all the details on each of these gigs…
Big night ahead…

UPDATE…
UPDATE:
Response so far has been very gratifying, but there’s a long way to go. Transport costs here are upwards of $25K, and he really, really needs to be brought back to the States for this level of care. Anything you can do, even if it’s only passing this on to others, would be most appreciated.
Thanks again from all of us at The Duende Project.

Not something we like to do, but trying to get every little bit of opportunity taken care of here…
Drummer Chris O’Donnell’s brother-in-law Jon was very recently involved in a serious boating accident while on vacation — you can read the whole story at the link below.
He needs to be transported home ASAP for acute trauma treatment. It’s not cheap to do that, and not covered by insurance. Transport has been arranged, but now it must be paid for…The link below gets you to a site which is trying to pull the funds together.
We understand that this is an unusual request, but if there’s anything you can do, it would be much appreciated. Many thanks.
There and back again…
We had a TERRIFIC time playing at starlite in Southbridge MA last night. Ripped a fine set of jazz, funk, and reggae-inflected rocklike musics and poems for a small but appreciative crowd in this new-ish performance space attached to a nice craft cocktail bar.
They liked us, we liked them — so much so that we’re ALREADY going back really soon — on Thursday, December 10 in fact. You should come. Really.
Tuesday night…
7 PM, starlite Gallery in Southbridge MA…full band will be on stage along with Ryan Kayhart and the “Cowboy” Matt Hopewell Trio, opening for C. J. Boyd. Good chance to come see us if you’re in the area, and a new venue to us so hoping to see a few of you at least there…
